Spending time with kids in the garden is the perfect way to enjoy the summer. Besides the fresh air, children love getting dirty, digging in the soil, watching flowers bloom and seeing the day-by-day changes that transform your landscaping once the warmer weather has arrived.
If you have the space to accommodate it, creating a play-area is a perfect and practical landscaping project. You can bring the playground to the safety of your backyard with sandboxes, swings, tree-houses or even a dedicated vegetable garden just for the kids to tend. Vegetables like radishes and lettuce are fast growing and hardy which is ideal in the Calgary climate.
With the right tools (kid-sized tools) you’ll find you suddenly have little helpers willing to weed the garden, plant seeds and discover the wildlife and natural critters that call your garden home.
Of course it’s easy to get distracted from the work that needs to be done, but really, distraction should be encouraged! Wheelbarrow rides and playing in the sprinkler, smelling the roses and eating fresh veggies out of the garden are all a part of a beautiful summer season and builds childhood memories.
One of our most favorite plants for kids is the sunflower which can grow exceptionally tall. You can measure your child against the stock and see how long it takes to surpass his or her height.
Other garden favorites for kids include Lambs Ear, which is soft and fuzzy in texture, and Bleeding Hearts, which has its very own story about a prince trying to woo a princess. Another great idea is to include fresh berries in your garden like raspberries or strawberries that can be picked and eaten fresh daily.
